Apparently the blogging community has some sort of chip on their shoulder about Hunters bringing sub-80 pets to Heroics.
These bloggers need to realize two things: one - not every Hunter is a BM Hunter, and two - the difference for a MM Hunter in ilvl 200 gear (i.e. Heroics) from a level 75 ferocity pet to a level 80 ferocity pet is about 225-250, comparing Mynia (my 75 Moth) and Ayamiss (my 80 Wasp). When my personal DPS (i.e. just what I do, not counting my pet) is consistently around 2500 if I have a +AP buff (BShout or Might) and about 2200 without one, the difference of 225-250 DPS doesn't mean much of anything.
Start picking on the DPSers who can't keep pace with tanks before picking at good Hunters who know they have the personal DPS to make up for an underpowered pet.

my opinion is, if its a pug bring your 80 pet, if its a guild run ... make sure everyone is ok with brining a lower lvl pet.
i say bring the lvl 80 to pugs because you dont know how good/bad the other dps'ers will be, so you may need to be on the top of your game to make up for it.
if its people you know will bring enough dps for the instance, you can bring the sub 80 pet (as long as they are ok with it) because the extra dps wont be too much of a problem.
also one thing you have to keep in mind with other blogs, the target audience is different. brk targets unexperienced hunters to make them better (while his humor and occasional posts bring back the more experienced). they may not be telling the people who will be doing enough personal damage or be in a guild that can either, so in their case, every little bit of damage helps.

I'll trade in the pet I'm leveling for an 80 when the healers in my heroics heal my pet, too. If they are that preoccupied with having enough DPS through an of-level pet, then it should be taken care of like any other party member.
Tinea died four times in H-UP, twice when everyone else was at full health (stupid DoTs).
As a hunter, regardless of spec, your pet is part of your total DPS. Bringing subpar pet means your not bringing your "A" game. That's what people are saying.
PUG, Guild, or Friend run, not bringing a leveled pet gimps your total dps output.
But as Rilgon says, if your the only one out DPSing the tank, then you have much bigger problems.
And as for healers healing pets?? Umm thats what pet management is for. IMO - the pet's health is your job, bring him back heal him up and then send him back in.
If I'm alive and my group is alive then the healer did their job. If my pet gets heals, then that's just a bonus.
But HEY! that's just my opinion.
Once again, this is just not a situation that I've ever had to deal with. My first pet to 80 was my tank, then I started with my DPS pet. I brought her to raids and heroics multiple times before she hit 80, and I didn't hear a peep. As long as she still provided Call of the Wild, there were no complaints.
And when the entire raid is at full health, but my pet is dying faster than Mend can take care of it, I should hope the healer that was complaining about being bored could throw out a heal or two.
You are all obviously focusing on the incorrect issue: call of the wild or heart of the phoenix?
Sorry to hijack this thread, but I'm interested in what people smarter than I am think about the talent choice.
I think common sense applies to Rilgon's post. If it's a situation where you are confident that the dps is adequate, then I don't see any issues with bringing a lower level pet. If it's a new encounter and people are still gearing up, then it's probably a good idea to go with your 80 pet.
I use both.
Call > Phoenix
I do not have LYW or Phoenix on any of my Ferocity pets.
Maybe I should explain why I take HotP and CotW over Bloodthirsty. I value my pet for the damage boost it gives me, so Call of the Wild is a must for supplementing Focused Fire. Then its Phoenix so I don't have to waste precious mana or cast time to rez my pet mid-fight.
If I were to go 11 points into BM, and grab Imp Revive Pet, I would consider moving that point out of Phoenix and into Bloodthirsty.
I would always ask before bringing a sub 80 pet myself, but if everyone is O.K with it, then bring the damn thing.
Otherwise, go grind for Frostweave!
You kinda... HAVE to have Bloodthirsty for Lick/Phoenix. o_O;
"You kinda... HAVE to have Bloodthirsty for Lick/Phoenix. o_O"
im pretty sure she means rabid.

Hopefully... and hopefully not.
Rabid is a must for PvE Pet builds.
You could experiment otherwise, but rabid does a big boost to damage in pets and avoidance is necessary for most of the battle in WotLK.
Correct me if I'm wrong =P
not to keen on the new layout...
as for pets... raid, I'll bring the full A game.
Considering most pugs I've been in, were C game, they can deal with a sub 80 pet since my tank pets are going to about the same dps..
Yes, I mean Rabid. Sorry, Blizzard's best friend is a Thesaurus.
I use Phoenix a lot - and I'm pretty good about bringing in my pet from AoE.
not to keen on the new layout...
What new layout? I haven't touched SES's layout in months. o_O;
I am sort of in agreement with admon.
I leveled my moth from 75-80 almost exclusively in dungeons and heroics. I would only bring him if it was a guild only run, and I was fully confident about the capabilities of everyone else in the group, and as long as they were okay with it.
I really have only had time to either solo OR group, so this was pretty much my only option. Also, my only other 80 was my gorilla, who was already doing less DPS than the moth at 75. So unless I wanted to replace one of my other pets for a temporary level 80, this was sort of what I needed to do!
Fair enough. If it's a guild run instance, and they're ok with it, then there's no problem.
That's really interesting.
I would bring my higher pet to guild runs because I wouldn't want to let my friends down.
In a PUG, it usually doesn't matter as I'm probably not going to see them again. If they beat me on DPS, I can just say, "see? Hunters are Not OP". If I beat them, well, I would have beat them harder with a higher lvl pet no?
Groups who need the extra DPS gaine dfrom a level 74 to a level 80 pet in order to complete a HEROIC have absolutely no business being there in the first place. End of.
