HAY GUYZ IM LEARNING! :v
So I found the Holy Grail of Marksmanship Hunting and I must say, it was something amazing to behold. I've also finally realized that trying desperately to run a 3:2 is, well, Huntarded.
I've become an enlightened Marksman. It's like when I finally "clicked" into a zen-like state in Molten Core and finally understood a shot rotation for the first time. It was something divine.
I have discovered my 1.5:1, and it is good. I'm currently reworking my entire DPS keybindings, replacing my Arcane Shot, Multi Shot, and 3:2 Steady buttons with new, personal macros that weave the shot in question with a Kill Command, and lets it all rest upon my shoulders to weave with as much skill as I used to weave in the good ol' days. I've also finally decided on the fate of my last undecided talent point (1/5 Improved Arcane).
For once, as a MM Hunter, I'm feeling at peace with my DPS. It's very... very soothing. I feel like I can proudly come into a group and assert myself as a real DPSer now, not a MMer trying to be a hackeyed BMer. I'm actually starting to understand what The Burning Crusade has done to my class, and I feel so proud of myself that I'm doing so. Sure, I know I'd still be doing more when I hit 70 as BM, but I feel that I am being a better overall DPSer as my DPS requires a far greater amount of skill than a BM Hunter's. After all, careful alternation of 3, 4, 5, and 6 (Arcane/Multi/Steady/Silencing) is way better than face-rolling your mouse wheel. :)
And I really, really appreciate the comments that I've finally started getting. Part of why I did this was to get the "rofl ur a moron" comments and "Hey, good luck as MM!" comments, and they're finally pouring in. Keep it up. Anything you wanna say, Stabilized Effort Scope is willing to listen to.

Are you going to stay Marksmanship at level 70?
If so, I'm sure you realize that, given equal knowledge of the class and equal gear ilevel, a Marksmanship hunter's will simply never come close to that of a Beast Master's. Furthermore, for raid utility, TSA's 125 AP to a maximum of 4 party members will not come close to touching EW's 125+ AP to all of the melee members in the raid.
Marksmanship becomes viable if you ever get enough haste gear that's prevalent in BT/Hyjal (mostly BT). You need an inordinate amount of haste for the Attack Power / Shot Buff talents of MM to overcome Serpent's Swiftness in BM.
I raid alongside a formerly MM-spec hunter (who now went Survival for EW). Back when he was MM (and still now when he's survival), I destroy him on the DPS charts every single pull. Our gear is approximately equal. Although, to be fair, mine is a bit better because I haven't had to wear any Tier 4 in a long while.

I'm replacing Steadying Bracers (LOL) with Master Assassin's Wristwraps (pro) in a day or two. Also, next Tuesday, I'm getting the Season 3 Gun, which will make my DPS shoot through the roof. Wolfslayer forced 1:1 FTL.
For comparison, the formerly MM hunter who I consistently own on the DPS charts is here:

If you'd read the first update (maybe second?), you'd know that I do intend to stay MM at 70. Yes, I know MM can't out-DPS BM, and I know MM can't out-buff BM or SV. That said, I'm going to do it anyways because I want to prove I can make it competitive.
Plus, if someone actually keeps harassing Blizzard about it, they'll either remove the spec or make it viable. :(
Quote Rilgon:

The sad thing is that the spec IS VIABLE ... just not for the gear level that most are able to attain. I've never done the theorycraft myself, but I'm guessing that one needs at least 100 - 150 haste rating purely from gear before the solid shot boosting talents behind MM can overtake Serpent's Swiftness.
The problem is that the kind of haste rating you need is only available on certain pieces of BT/Hyjal gear (like Fists of Mukoa from Najentus and Valestalker's Girdle from Kaz'rogal). However, those two pieces, even though they have a lot of Haste Rating, they lack Hit and Crit, which are two fundamental hunter talents.
I'm not sure if it's possible to attain that kind of haste rating required to breathe life into MM AND stay close to hit-cap, even with the best BT gear.
I simply don't know because I'm not at that level of gear yet.
I know this is an older post, but I clicked on the link and read the whole thing before I realized it was Howi that wrote it ^_^ I find it comforting to know that when you are able to come to the same conclusions as Howizter, then you are on the way to being a good MM hunter.
Cheers to you!
